From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first resembling a modern computer were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). The first electronic computers were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PC). Modern computers based on tiny integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age, what most people think of as a "computer", but the embedded computers found in devices ranging from fighter aircraft to industrial robots, digital cameras, and toys are the most numerous. The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a personal digital assistant to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How can I make my computer inaccessible while I am vacationing? Q. I do not want anyone on my computer while I am away and so I was wondering if there is a way to prevent my room mate from accessing my computer while I'm not there. I put a password on the accounts on the computer but I feel he might try something drastic, like rebooting the computer. Help? Thanks. Asked by ~*Lyn*~ - Thu May 24 19:24:19 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ha ha ha "rebooting the computer" is drastic to you? Do you mean "reformatting" the computer? As long as he has access to it, little you can do to have someone not reformat it. If you put passwords on all the accounts including the administrator account (which I know you didn't because you don't sound like you know how), then he won't be able to login. To put a password on the administrator account, login to windows in safe mode by hitting the F8 key after you do a "drastic" reboot. Then go to the control panel and user accounts. Set a password on the administrator account. Answered by Daredevil - Thu May 24 19:29:39 2007 What computer hardware needs to have drivers updated? Q. Hi everyone. I am currently planning on building a new computer. I am wondering what hardware I need to get driver updates for (first time building a computer). I know you need to update the motherboard and the graphics card. What else? Thanks everyone. Asked by Allan - Mon May 25 20:58:06 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. As far as updating components it shouldnt be too difficult, especially if your building a new pc. If you OS is Vista, just try picking components that are compatible and it should work fine without any updates. And so on for any OS. Also, I'm a fan of "if its working right, why update?". Sometimes updating a component can make it worse rather than better. Answered by krimsonflames - Mon Jun 1 08:49:23 2009 My computer is making a grinding noise at start up only?
Q. Every time I turn my computer on, there is a loud grinding noise as it boots up. After the computer is all booted up and at the desktop (meaning, that on my monitor, you can see all of my icons and such) it stops. My fans all seem to be fine. What could this be and how do I fix it? Thank you! Asked by Karen M - Mon Feb 23 18:01:42 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your fans are likely at fault. I know they seem fine, but they may be having thermal issues. Try running the PC for 15 minutes or so, then REBOOT the PC using the START menu, RESTART sequence. IF the 'ginding noise' happens again, then your system disk is possibly faling and likely needs to be replaced SOON. A BUSY disk doesn't sound like "GRINDING" If the 'grinding noise' does not come back, I would venture that one of your fans is failing. It is noisy when COLD, but runs smoothly after warming. Remember, you have most likely 3 fans: CASE, CPU and Video Card GPU fans. Could be any one of those, but check the Video Card fan first since it tends to be the smallest and usually of poorer quality. (Yes, They TOO can be replaced) Answered by TheAnswerMan - Mon Feb 23 18:09:11 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "computer" A computer is a machine for manipulating data according to a list of instructions.
