The Central Processing Unit (CPU) or the processor is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, and is the primary element carrying out the computer's functions. This term has been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s . The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples, but their fundamental operation remains much the same. Early CPUs were custom-designed as a part of a larger, sometimes one-of-a-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application has largely given way to the development of mass-produced processors that are made for one or many purposes. This standardization trend generally began in the era of discrete transistor mainframes and minicomputers and has rapidly accelerated with the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex CPUs to be designed and manufactured to tolerances on the order of nanometers. Both the miniaturization and standardization of CPUs have increased the presence of these digital devices in modern life far beyond the limited application of dedicated computing machines. Modern microprocessors appear in everything from automobiles to cell phones and children's toys. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to hook up a CPU fan in a vehicle for Ham Radio? Q. I have a Yaesu FT1802m. It has about 2 or so inches on each side for clearance and I need to cool it during long transmissions. Is it possible to hook up a 12v cpu fan to cool it??? If not then what can I do. I drive a single cab manual transmission chevy and don't have much space to move the radio to another location. Asked by customleatherwork - Fri Dec 14 19:16:24 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Its the 21st century man...either get A/C or just get a CB. If you have a 12V fan however, you need a Fused power wire and a ground wire. Take the Power wire from the battery(make sure it has a fuse), to a toggle switch, from there go to the fans power wire. As for the ground wire, take and mount the ground wire from any part of the frame(any bolt or screw directly mounted to frame or bare metal will do), to the other prong on the toggle, and from there to the ground wire on the fan. A few things to remember: make sure the power wire is not run thru the door or any where else that it can pinch make sure the fuse is disconnected until you are done wiring. Keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case of fire. Good Luck!!! Answered by Franchise - Fri Dec 14 19:44:24 2007 How do i prervent so many processes from launching when i start my cpu? Q. I have 40 processes running f/ my results when i run "Ad Aware".This seems like a lot. My cpu is working fine except it's slower than it used to be. I'm hoping to prevent some processes f/ f/ launching at start up, and be able to turn them on when i want to use them, to be able to regain the lost speed. However, you can regulate how many programs run in the background to a great degree. Lots of software put ".exe" files into the start-up menu and this causes a loss of available RAM and some CPU usage depending on the program. Here are some tips to help you get your PC running more efficiently on the whole. A major cause of slow PC's is fragmentation of the hard drive. You need to defragment the HD at least once a week if not more depending on how much you use your computer, and what you do with it. One way is to use the defragment utility built into Windows XP. It is slow but does the job rather well. Go to: Start > Programs > Accessories > System… [cont.] Answered by Dick - Sun Feb 11 14:29:52 2007 How much RAM and CPU power do I need to run Vista?
Q. I am running XP on an Athlon 64, 3000 1.79GHz CPU and 960 MB of RAM. Are these enough for Vista or do I need to upgrade? If so, to what? Asked by accur8one - Thu Oct 23 07:29:11 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. The processor meets the minimum, but it is recommened that you have 1gb (1024mb) of memory to run Vista. (2gb for it to run fast.) As the specs indicate that this is an old computer, you will want to check to see if there are video, audio, network card, modem, chipset, etc. Vista drivers available for the computer. Otherwise Vista will not run correctly. For a PC of that age, Vista is probably NOT the best choice. That PC is desgined for XP, and XP will run much better on it.
