The central processing unit (CPU) or the processor is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, and is the primary element carrying out the computer's functions. It is the unit that reads and executes program instructions. The data in the instruction tells the processor what to do. The instructions are very basic things like reading data from memory or sending data to the user display, but they are processed so rapidly that we experience the results as the smooth operation of a program. This term has been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s. The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples, but their fundamental operation remains much the same.

Early CPUs were custom-designed as a part of a larger, sometimes one-of-a-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application has largely given way to the development of mass-produced processors that are made for one or many purposes. This standardization trend generally began in the era of discrete transistor mainframes and minicomputers and has rapidly accelerated with the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex CPUs to be designed and manufactured to tolerances on the order of nanometers. Both the miniaturization and standardization of CPUs have increased the presence of these digital devices in modern life far beyond the limited application of dedicated computing machines. Modern microprocessors appear in everything from automobiles to cell phones and children's toys.

What makes the CPU temperature of my computer higher than my other computer?
Q. I have two computer exibiting higher CPU temperature reaching 60 deg. Cent. It works but sometimes it trips off and restart again. The CPU Fans is rotating at 2900 rpm with the same speed with my other normal computers. I tried applying silicone compound at the surface of the CPU heatsink to maximize transfer of heat from the CPU but the temperature remain the same. Do I have problem with my mother board or my CPU. I"m using Athlon XP 2500 for my processor unit.

A. Probably an issue with your PSU (Power Suppy) if it's tripping off. Try swapping the PSU from other computer and check.

How much does the CPU affect FPS in 3d games compared to video cards?
Q. Is there some kind of comparison of different CPU's with the same decent video card? I'm planning on getting something like a GeForce 7600 GT and am wondering if my Pentium D 2.8 Ghz will be decent? Most of the tests I see have better CPU's then mine, how much will it affect my performance?

A. The old saying, No better Than The Weakest Link. No one part, in the computer, by its self, is going to get you performance? Motherboard dictates the CPU and RAM, CPU dictates the required class of motherboard! If the board is sloppy, the CPU performance will not be optimal. The same is true with the RAM! With all of that, throw in the graphics card! and no matter what you have as far as those components are concerned, the system still reads and writes, constantly to the Tyrannous REX, the hard drive! All of that should go into your decision making processing to evaluate the best card for your current system Configuration!

Is this enough to keep my cpu at the recommended Temperature when overclocking?
Q. I have a intel core 2 duo processor at 2.66 GHz with a standard cpu cooling fan. If i overclock it to 3.00 GHz, will it burn out my cpu?
Asked by steven S - Wed Dec 31 22:34:18 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. hey, things you should know. overclocking voids your warranty immediately. secondly overclocking generates more heat than the standard fan may be able to dissipate. i would strongly recommend you get some good case fans, and put your pc in an air conditioned room if you wanna overclock. if you wanna go into the big leagues, get a water cooled system. but overclocking needs more fans. get more fans to remove extra heat.
