Q. if i use component cables on my cable box to my hdtv will it look hd quality
Asked by Alex - Wed Mar 31 15:18:23 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Component (red/green/blue) can carry HD video. Composite (yellow/red/white) can't. Of course, you will have to have HD service with an HD box from your cable company to get HD quality.

When I hook my cable box between my home theatre and HDTV, I get no picture. What can I do to use one input?
Q. I have a Comcast HDTV box, feeding into my Sony Bravia home theatre system via coaxial cable, then to my HDTV via component cable. However I do not get a picture this way. I know I can connect the cable box and the home theatre system via separate component inputs, but is there a way to use both without switching inputs? Thank you!

A. Even if you COULD get this system to work, you wouldn't want to. The coax cable output of the cable box will not be HD, it will be a standard SDTV signal. You want to connect the cable box to the TV using an HD compatible connection (either component or HDMI). If your TV has multiple component connections, connect the cable and DVD separately. If the TV has a component and an HDMI connection, use the HDMI from your cable (most HD cable boxes have an HDMI connection) and the component connection from your DVD. You won't need a switch, but you will need to use the TV's "source select" feature to switch between TV and DVR. Finally, if your TV has only one component input, go out and buy a component video switch (about $30 at radio shack) [cont.]

Can I purchase a cable box off the shelf to view free cable?
Q. I am getting free cable from my apt building, and would to add an hd cable box to be able to view menu and hd channels. Can i purchase something off the shelf to do this, or does it need to be from cable company? Without the box I am able to connect to tv and view standard cable. Thanks!

A. Your apartment does not have free cable. Either it is included with your rent/fees, or you aren't intended to have it and they never disconnected you yet, or you have connected yourself up and are stealing it. You can get a QAM capable tuner (either a box or built into your TV) to get some unencrypted channels. To get he encrypted channels you need to subscribe to a digital package and get the box from your provider.

Do I need a converter box if I have a cable subscription but not a digital cable subscription?
Q. I have a cable subscription that is more than basic cable, I just don't get the channels higher than the universal "channel 100" or so. I plug my coaxil cable in directly from the wall to my television. Will I need a converter box after Feb 2009 or should I be ok? Again, I don't have a digital cable subscription (no cable box). Thank you!

A. You do not need a converter box for cable (or satellite). You only need one if you want to add an antenna and pick up HDTV for free while paying for basic cable. And finally, the converter box usually will not help you pick up the digital cable signals. It is not supposed to do that. And the digital cable signals are usually sent through the cable with a non-compatible standard to the over the air digital signals (in technical terms digital cable is usually QAM and digital over the air is always ATSC in the United States). Some cable systems use ATSC for some channels but the channels may not be received all the time because they may be on demand channels (other participants here and elsewhere on the internet have reported this -- I… [cont.]

If a special cable is required from the box to the tv, why does the original cable to the house work?
Q. A HDMI cable is required between the cable box and the HD TV. How is it possible for the original cable run to the house able to transmit the HD programs?

A. HDMI carries a LOT of information, which is why a simple coaxial doesn't carry the data. In the ground, odds are the cable is fiber optic from the cable company. When you have an HD receiver box, it decodes the high def signal and then your HDMI or component cables take that to the TV.

How to get all the cable channels w/o a cable box?
Q. My apartment has free extended cable (at least 150 channels), but I do not own a cable box. My tv can only access channels below 75. Is there any way besides renting a cable box from the provider to be able to watch all the channels >100? I wouldn't be stealing any channels, all the channels are included in the cable package.

A. No and even if there were a way, it would be illegal and I am sure you do not want to steal service for your cable company.

What should I buy to connect my cable box and my xbox360 to my tv at the same time?
Q. Both my xbox and my cable tv box use red green and blue video cables + red and white audio cables, the kind that are bounded together. I only have enough slots for one of these cables so I have to take out the cables for my xbox if I want to watch TV and vice versa. What should I buy so I won't have to do this? I won't need more than two slots.

A. Most Cable set-top boxes don't have audio and video inputs - just outputs. Your best bet is to buy an a/v switch where you can connect your wii and any other device you want.

How do I connect my laptop to my cable box with an hdmi cord?
Q. My Sony VAIO laptop has an hdmi output, I have the cable, and plug it into the comcast cable box hdmi port. However, I still can't seem to get my laptop screen to display on my tv. How do I do this?
Asked by Danielle - Fri Feb 26 21:06:43 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The hdmi output from your laptop only works for playing movies out, not screen splitting. If you have a BluRay player in your Sony, the output from your laptop should go directly to the tv, not to your cable box. There should be another video out on the Sony for showing your screen on a projector (PowerPoint presentations and the like). Also this from AfterDawn forums: PowerDVD only displays HD content on the primary display. You have to make your HDTV the primary display. HD content is the only type that is affected in this manner. Thank Microsoft and the HD DRM overlords. So your laptop screen will be black while playing an HD movie out to tv.

Trying to Connect Comcast Digital Cable Box and DVD Player to an older TV with only a coax cable connection?
Q. It works fine with cable from wall to Comcast Box and comcast box to television, via an RF modulator. I tried connecting the DVD player to the cable's auxiliary input box, but I cannot get the unit to recognize the input device... any input device for that matter, whether a VCR, a Nintendo, or any DVD player I connect. Thanks!
Asked by sandgnat - Tue Jan 22 16:51:02 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The cable box is not built to support that function the box has no video in connections, only video out. Use RCA connections to the dvd video out to video in on the tv or RF Modulator. Same goes for video games. VCR hookup - From the CABLE box use Coax from TV/Antenna out to video in on the VCR, then from vcr cable out/Video out to video in on the tv or rf modulator. Or checkout craigslist for a free tv with more connections to bypass the RF Modulator.

Can anyone help me with my motorola cable box?
Q. We have charter and for some reason when we turned on the TV today it said that the service would be with us shortly, but we waited for a long time and it hasn't come back. We just got it installed a little over a week ago. But that isn't the problem. Since it wasn't working, I unattached the cable box cord that was hooked into the VCR (we have a cord that then goes from the VCR to the TV). Now that i unhooked it, when i turn on the TV the cable box and TV seem to be disconnected, because when i change channels it only changes it on the cable box and not on the TV. Also, the TV now just has a fuzzy screen and makes noise instead of before when it said that it will be there shortly. Can anyone tell me how to get the cable box back… [cont.]
Asked by Travis F - Sun Jan 21 01:29:58 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What he said is correct, your TV does need to be on Ch. 3 or 4, depending on your location. It sounds as though you don't have everything hooked up correctly. Here is how it should be hooked up: 1. The cable from the wall should go into the "INPUT" coax connection on the back of the cable box. 2. From the "OUTPUT" port on the cable box, connect a cable jumper to the "IN" port on your VCR. 3. From the "OUT" port on your VCR, connect a cable jumper to the back of your TV. This should restore your picture and sound. Remember to put your TV back on ch. 3 or 4 and leave it there. If you are still seeing the "One moment please" screen, there may be a problem with the cable box. You can verify this by temporarily connecting the cable… [cont.]

how to put a cable on a tv without getting another cable box?
Q. So we have a tv on the living room that has a cable, but how do i put another cable upstairs without getting another cable box. I can't mount stuff on the wall because we live in an apartment, thank you very much guys.
Asked by Cee - Sun Aug 30 02:06:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you want all the channels, you cannot without having another cable box. You could split the signal and send a wire upstairs, but since you cannot mount, you will have wire running along stairs, and you would possibly trip. On the other hand, if you have cable, you should be able to receive the basic channels by connecting your coax cable to wall outlet there, that should have the signal.

Can an analog to digital converter work like a cable box?
Q. I have the verizon fios basic cable package, and I recently stopped getting my signal (I don't have a cable box and they switched over to digital). If I buy an analog to digital converter, and use the 2 RF input/outputs, will I be able to receive my cable channels again? If not, why? Also, can you buy a cable box instead of renting one from the company? Where can you buy the box? Does it matter what type or model it is?
Asked by Steve2245 - Thu Jun 19 09:12:16 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. A digital-to-analog converter box will allow you to continue using your existing analog TV to watch over-the-air digital broadcasts. You do not need to get rid of your existing analog TV. In addition, analog sets should continue to work as before if connected to a subscription service such as cable or satellite TV. YES you can buy own box instead or renting one from the company

How can I hook up a VCR and a DVD to a cable box then to my TV?
Q. I have a Sanyo TV from the 90's. It does NOT have any A/V slots only one spot on the back for a coax cable. I would like to hook up a Emerson VCR ,a Philips DVD player, and my cable box to the same TV. I tried running a line from the wall to the VCR then to the cable box and then to the TV and used A/V cords to hook the DVD player to the VCR. That made my cable picture terrible. I tried moving the A/V cord from the VCR directly to the cable box. No change. Even when I don't hook up the DVD player at all and attempt to run just from the VCR to the cable box to the TV...I can't seem to ever get the VCR to display a video on any channel both with the cable box on or off. HELP!! What is the correct way to hook this up so that it all works… [cont.]
Asked by justinbandley - Mon Mar 5 21:36:56 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need 1 cable splitter, 1 coax cable switch box, 1 RF modulator and several pieces of coax. Cable that comes from wall - hook up to cable splitter. One output of splitter goes to the cable box in. Other output of splitter goes to VCR in. Output of cable box goes to cable switch box. Output of VCR goes to input of RF modulator. Output of RF modulator goes to cable switch box. DVD player hooks up to RF modulator via A/V cables. Position 1 of cable switch box will enable you to watch cable box. Position 2 of cable switch box will enable you to watch VCR or DVD player. Hooking it up this way will enable you to tape one show while watching another.

A. you may also connect rca (red, white & yellow) directly to the tv...on the vcr back panel, the cables should be on the INPUT and the other end should be on the tv's OUTPUT..doing so would send signal from the tv directly to your recorder...for you to watch what you've recorded,..you would need to use another rca...this time connection would be..OUTPUT from the VCR then INPUT on the tv back panel...
