How is the generator connected to the jet engine in a passenger jet?
Q. I know that in some systems, the engine drives a hydraulic pump that then drives a hydraulic uh... "motor" that turns the generator, but can you please explain this to me in more detail? I especially can't understand how the hydraulic pump is connected to the engine - is it connected to the shaft in the middle of the engine (the one that connects the compressor and turbine blades)? If so, how? Doesn't it turn at tens of thousands of RPM? This is really my question - in a nutshell, how do you connect a generator or pump to a jet engine?
Asked by lmf7000 - Sun Apr 19 18:30:16 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Good responses above. Not all engines include constant speed drives (CSDs) however. Some engines drive the generator directly and use a voltage regulator to maintain proper power to the aircraft. In this case, the gearbox is driven by a bevel gear on the HP shaft through a smaller, perpendicular, accessory drive shaft to an external gearbox, which then uses a series of bevel and spur gears to reduce the speed by roughly an order of magnitude to several accessories, including a starter/generator, hydraulic pump, oil pump, fuel control, etc. By the time the speed reduction occurs, there is not much difference between flight idle and max speed at the generator pad, so a CSD is just added weight for little justification.

Is it ok to leave a wire connected to the negative car battery terminal?
Q. I have an air horn (siren) that I started hooking up to my car today but didnt finish all the wiring. Connecting the positive wire was fine but connecting the negative wire was a b**ch, so I dont want to disconnect it. Is it ok to leave the wire connected to the negative car battery terminal with no positive connection?

A. Sure just keep the other end of the wire connected to it's spot or tape it JUST in case it wants to touch the positive terminal. Now like yousaid the positive is another problem all together.

How can I keep myself connected to a wireless internet connection?
Q. Everytime I close my laptop I have to go through this whole process just to get connected back online. When I close and everything is ok, I come back later and open it. I get a message saying that I have very little to no connection. How can I just keep it connected instead of having to go through the process of running the Wireless Zero Configuration?
Asked by Mike - Sun Apr 13 21:43:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have to be somewhere near your wireless router. When you close your laptop, also make sure that your setting of "What happens when I close the lid of my laptop" is set to "Do nothing." I think the default setting is it will sleep or hibernate. If that is not the issue, you might need to contact your technical support group in your office or the company providing you internet. You can also check the manual of your wireless router (if it's yours) to know up to how many meters away can you stay to get signal. Sometimes, the connection seems okay. But after a while, the connection can be lost because of interferences like microwaves ovens.

Q. Here's the situation: I have a modem which have 4 connections. 1 of them is connected to a wireless router and 3 others to computers. When I connect to the router, I can see the workgroup computers of others who use wireless. However, I can't see the workgroup computers of those connected to the modem. Any way to solve this?
Asked by wwwdrecom - Thu Apr 23 01:00:55 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. you might want to try switching your connections around, try connecting the computers to the router and connect the modem to the port on the router specifically for modems (IE: a linksys router has a modem connection to the left of the other ones, separate). Also, if this isn't your problem, make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup.

Now go to the laptop then find My Network Places its usually in the Start menu and could be on the desktop. there you will see a folder lke this "K: on \\PC" Where K is the folder and \\PC is the name of the pc.

A. There may be a conflict of interest with the wireless and the cable. The port settings on your computer may be incorrect with what settings are on the router. Software needs to be installed for the router and the computer to "talk" to each other. This is a little over my head. I'm a hardware guy and out of practice. Call your internet service provider and the designer of your router.

How is the evolution of photosynthesis connected to the endosymbiotic theory?
Q. Does anybody know how is the evolution of photosynthesis connected to the endosymbiotic theory? I think evolution and photosynthesis are two theories about origins of life on the Earth, but I don't understand how they could be connected.
Asked by Nataly D - Tue May 20 14:21:33 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First let me correct your last statement. Evolution is a theory about the origins of biological diversity on earth. Photosynthesis is a process by which plants and other organisms convert light energy into chemical potential energy that organisms can use for cellular processes. As we usually think about it, photosynthesis allows plants to "fix" the carbons from carbon dioxide into sugars. Fortunately for us, we have a way to break down the sugars in starch, and convert that chemical potential energy back into something we can use directly for stuff we want to do (e.g. ATP to allow you to move, think, build stuff, and reproduce). Endosymbiosis starts out with one cell engulfing another. Usually when a cell does this, it digests the… [cont.]

How do I make my browser work when my computer is connected to my wireless router?
Q. Windows XP. Linksys WRT54G. When my internet cable is plugged directly into my computer from the wall, my computer obtains an IP address and connects to my browser no problem. When I plug the cable from the wall into my router and then from the router into the computer, it also obtains a IP address, says I'm connected but my browser will not work. This also happens when I connect to it wirelessly. So basically, when I go directly from the modem to my computer my internet works fine, but when I go through to router, it says it's connected (Internet and WLAN light are both on as well on the router) and has IP address but the browser will not work. I've tried so many things, please help!!!
Asked by Luke K - Thu Aug 23 12:42:21 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. make sure it gets IP Address, Gateway, & DNS. go to Start > Run > type CMD to open command prompt, then type ipconfig /ALL, make sure the adapter has tcp info. Also don't use wireless and ethernet at the same time, 1 or the other, if you plug your ethernet in, disable the wireless, if you use wireless don't plug in the ethernet. Make note of those IP Addresses, then from the copmmand line ping the default gateway ip (ie.. ping 192.168.1.1) or whatever your gateway IP is. if that works you can communicate with the router. Next ping an external host such as ping yahoo.com, if it fails ping the IP...ping 66.94.234.13 if that works its a bad DNS Server

Does the iphone stay connected to the internet if you start an application and it locks?
Q. Yesterday night I plugged my iphone in to charge. I must have pressed clocks when I put it in as this morning when I woke up, 8 hours later, and unlocked the phone clocks was the first thing to show up on screen. Does that mean that the internet was connected all night or does it disconnect when it locks?

A. the phone can stay connected to the internet until you press the home key if the phone is n sleep mode or "locked" the phone is not connected to the internet tho it can be set to fetch data on a regular basis despite sleep mode state, but this isn't something you can accidental do. i wouldn't worry about it if it's in sleep mode of if you've at least returned to the home screen.

How do I keep my wirless Internet Connected at all times on my laptop?

A. You are most likely too far from the wireless router, sit closer to the wireless router or move the wireless router close to you. There could also be something interfering with the signal, check between YOU and the ROUTER and see if there are any electrical devices that you can move out of the way.
