How much coolant should I pour in my radiator?
Q. I actually use water for my radiator. Adding only a 120ml of Whiz coolant on it. After reading from on-line helps, I've learned that water should not be used. Does this means I should fill my radiator with coolants only or is there a ratio for water:coolant proportioning. Thanks for the help. My assembled jeep uses a Toyota 4K engine.

A. Usually you can put one gallon of antifreeze into the radaitor then finish feeling it up with water. That usually works out to be around 50 percent coolant and 50 percent water. Some people like to run there's with 100 percent coolant ,but i think that's a waste of money.

How often should I need to add coolant to my BMW 540i?
Q. It seems like the "Check Coolant" message is displayed too frequently, and I have to add water too often. What is the normal frequency for adding coolant to a car? Oh-Oh: In response to the first answer, which was very good, I should also ask what happens if you just use water? I add water (just water) probably every once a week or every two weeks. Could I have damaged anything by not using coolant?
Asked by ::ponders:: - Wed Feb 21 16:19:03 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. First, don't ever use just water...in hot conditions, you may have to add a little coolant to the reservoir every month or two. Coolant evaporates too, the reservoir is vented. If you mean every few days, or a week, you likely have another problem, which could range from thermostat (common), to hoses (also fairly common), to real bad reasons like head gaskets, freeze plugs, and/or cracked heads or block.

Why is my engine getting hot when plenty of coolant is in the reservoir?
Q. I have a 1999 Chevy Lumina LS. The "Low Coolant" dashboard light came on but when I check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir, there's plenty in it (way above the Hot line when engine is warm). The temperature gauge on the dashboard is showing that the engine temperature is increasing. It stopped at halfway after a 20-30 minute drive. It's usually pointing at one-eighth of the guage. Is there anything I can do without getting a mechanic?

A. Go ahead and change the thermostat first because it's the easiest and the cheapest. Normal coolant in the system but still overheats usually means you have a bad water pump. If your not experienced then you have to bring it in.

What is the goo in the coolant of a used car?
Q. I recently went to look at a 2003 Beetle TDI to purchase. While doing my pre-drive inspection I checked the coolant overflow. I looked inside and noticed that the coolant was an orange/red with white bubbles on top. The coolant did not smell like fuel. However, at the neck of the coolant filler I found a goo the consistency of gelatin (before it dissolves in water), and mixed with it was what looked like small metal shavings. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

A. If the car has an automatic transmission, there might be a leak in the transmission fluid cooler (which is inside the rediator in most cars) the transmission fluid gets in the engine coolant, and often engine coolant gets in the transmission fluid as well. Neither is good. The color might also be from rust, but I think, even if that was the original coolant from when the car was made, I don't think there would be that much rust yet.

A. you are probably leaking somewhere... i just replaced the radiatior, head gasket, and a bunch of hoses in my vehicle. check around and underneath for leaks. With the engine running and being careful not to touch any hot or moving parts check under the hood for leaks starting with your hoses then the clamps and then the radiatior, block, and water pump... also while idling check under your vehicle for puddles of antifreeze. If you don't notice any puddles under your truck then it would be leaking and then evaproating off of the hot block. hope that helps... i know mine was a hassle to fix.

A. nothing as long as it is compatible with your vehicle. if not over time corrosion will occur. a little hint about antifreeze not many know. it never goes bad. the corrosion inhibitor does. you can get inhibitor at most auto parts stores and add once a year. back in the 30's to 50's the inhibitor was potent enough to last 50 yrs or better. but now days antifreeze is a big seller. why make it last or tell the public what i just told you?

What can cause HC to show up in the coolant other than a head gasket?
Q. Can a head gasket be blown or a head cracked even when the truck runs great, has great power, doesn't use coolant, and passes cylinder pressure and coolant pressure tests? Trying to figure out my newly purchased 96 Yukon. I know the previous owners of this truck and know the history on it. For the past year, it's been having a problem starting when cold. It is NOT the typical fuel pump or regulator or ACT sensor issue, because the problem is the way in which the truck CRANKS when cold. When it's cold, it cranks fast for maybe one revolution, then cranks really slow (too slow to start sometimes), almost like something is binding up or the starter is failing. The starter has been changed twice since this problem presented itself about one… [cont.]

A. If you hydrolock an engine, saying that it's got a problem starting is an understatement. Hydrolocking occurs when a cylinder fills up with water, and if you try to crank over a hydrolocked engine, you're likely to break something. At the very least, you should see a LOT of coolant disappearing, and it would spit a slug of water out the exhaust when it starts. If this thing passes a leakdown test, it almost certainly doesn't have a blown head gasket. I would suspect a problem with the ring gear if it's not the starter - or an incompetant mechanic shimming the starter wrong if the Yukon uses starter shims. (I know some Chevies use these, and if you adjust it wrong, the starter will bind. Not sure if they'd have them on a Yukon or not.)

What to do when my low coolant light comes on, my heat not working, and my antifreeze leaks?
Q. I have a 1997 Chevy Lumina. Recently my heat has stopped working and my low coolant light came on. My car started to run hot and smoking from under the hood. I put antifreeze in it but it just leaks out. Not rapidly though. And it tends to run hot sometimes. I have been told that it can be a hole in my radiator, bad thermostat, or something about hoses. Any suggestions?

A. Bite the bullet and pay for a new radiator. The radiator you are using is hopelessly clogged.. if it is flowing it is not flowing good enough. Check cylinder pressures to make sure you have not blowed a head gasket already..

What happens if you pour a little coolant in the power steering fluid?
Q. My boyfriend accidentally poured some coolant on top of the power steering fluid (wrong reservoir). Is it going to cause any serious problems? What should we do?
Asked by Shrubzy - Wed May 20 21:35:08 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just to be on the safe side i would drain the power steering fluid and dispose of it then add new one. The worst thing that can happen is damage your rack and pinion and/or your power steering pump. The least that can happen is make your power steering pump squeak or...nothing. But i would recommend to drain it and fill it back again. How much is a little?

A. you have to be EPA certified to service any stationary appliance that contains any type of freon. (including your air conditioner) the fine for tampering with an air conditioner (or heat pump) with out the proper license is $25000 per day, per occurrence. the bounty for turning in some one that is not properly licensed is $1000. in order to recover freon from a a residential unit you would need an EPA section 608, type II license, and the proper recovery machine, and recovery bottles. i strongly suggest that you let a professional handle this. aside from the fact that you will be breaking the law, and probably releasing ozone destroying chemicals into the atmosphere, there is a good chance that since you obviously don't know what you… [cont.]

Q. One of my coolant pipes burst while driving down the highway spilling coolant all over the engine of my car. It dried and looks like salt water dried on my car. It appears to be deposits of white crusty stuff. I tried to clean it off with numerous engine cleaners, oil degreasers, etc, and none of them seem to do the trick. What causes boilover in a 1997 chrysler concorde, from the coolant reservoir drain hose?
Q. 1997 Chrysler Concorde, the top of the coolant reservoir (this car doesn't have access to the actual radiator, if you need to add fluid has to be done from the coolant reservoir) has the drain hose in case of overfill or boilover. The drain hose is attached to the reservoir, but the other end is not attached to anything. I noticed it overheating today, and when looking under the hood couldn't see any leaks. Under the car, there was a slight leak coming from the side of the reservoir (passenger side) almost behind and in front of the wheel. When I cut the car off, water started shooting from the hose for boilovers. That either shouldn't happen, or it should be routed back into the tank. Any clue what causes this? The fans work, and the top… [cont.]

A. either the thermostat may be sticking on it,or the radiator may be getting stopped up in the bottom of it ,that will cause them to do this real bad,and the only way to stop this is take the radiator off ,and have it cleaned out,it would be a good idea to have this done anyway ,if that's not it you can at least rule that out,but those cars were good for that, that would be where i would start looking on that one, ,that and the thermostat, good luck on it.
