What kind of hardware do studios use to develop and render graphics?
Q. Do they use single processors like core i7 or quad cores or they use any specific hardware from any company or they make a computer farm? Because I heard it took several days to render single frame of Transformers 2. Why would anything take so much time!! Is it because they were rendering for a big screen?

Whats the difference between high end drum hardware and low end hardware?
Q. Guitar Center is only allowing me to sell high end hardware but I don't know the difference!

A. This is like asking what's the difference between a Nissan Micra and a Range Rover after all, they both have a wheel at each corner. There's a saying, quality always costs less. If you can't actually hear a difference it's probably because you're not sensetive to it but you should be able to recognised other differences such as build quality, materials etc. Quality hardware will usually last longer and sound better.

Q. i'm not even certain if its jacuzzi. there aren't any markings to identify it. tub works great but all exterior hardware is corroded. A. I assume this is a jetted bath tub rather than a hot tub? What you are going to find is primarily plastic jets. They can have chrome, brass, stainless faceplates, however. That might be all you need to purchase. Try a local plumbing supply store. Betcha they can fix you up.

How do you start learning about upgrading your computer hardware without the risk of screwing it up?
Q. I have always wanted to learn about upgrading graphic cards and other stuff but i am always afraid that doing this will screw up my computer. A. You might try taking a class at a technical college. I'm taking a computer hardware class and when you do so, you don't have to worry about screwing up a computer, it becomes part of the learning process.

What hardware is good for making electronic music?
Q. I make music using software only at the moment, which im fine and comfortable with, but id like to atleast have a little bit of hardware to have on board with me. I make downtempo/glitch/electron ica. Is there stuff like drum machines or anything else that people would recommend? Note: synths are okay, but i dont really play the keys, im a bassist

A. A decent and affordable drum machine to consider is a Boss DR series (like the DR-880). And if you can get your hands on one, look into a Roland TB-303 or a "TB clone." This is basically a bass synth (no, there are no keys). The original TB is hard to come by, but there are plenty of clones out there that do the job well.

How does the hardware of a computer understand binary code?
Q. I know this maybe hard to answer specifically and fully. Even a general and simple answer would be great here. I'm not sure how the hardware can be told what to do all through 1s and 0s. How can they know 1 is on and 0 is off? How does the binary code touch the hardware, through the operating system, and tell a component what to do?
Asked by John - Fri Dec 4 18:05:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. At the most basic level computer hardware doesn't understand anything. Zeroes and ones are represented by a voltage, or a lack of one. Elementary circuits, called gates, composed of a few transistors each, perform conditional tasks based on whether one or two inputs are on or off. (if the input is this, output zero, otherwise output one, and so on). Gates are combined to form more sophisticated structures, which in turn are combined to form memory banks and the basic components of the cpu. The CPU itself simply (so to speak) inputs one or more instruction streams, performing tasks conditionally on the basis of what it reads. What does it understand? Nothing. It's all perfectly mechanical. The real question isn't really, how… [cont.]

A. In high school I did a work experience program (for school credit) at a local computer repair shop. It was done for no pay of course, but I learned quite a bit. I'd recommend going to a local computer shop (not the shain stores like Staples or Future Shop, but a Ma and Pop shop) and and ask if you can do some job shadowing once a week or so on a volunteer basis. I imagine someone will want the assistance. I learned a lot over just 6 months at the place I worked at, and I only put in about 1 hr twice a week.

A. The truth is that "post-production" is occurring almost from the beginning, before any film (or video) ever is rolled through a camera. The process begins with a decision to make a project and deciding why the project is being made. Most movies are made as "for profit" investment enterprises. Most short films are made as "calling cards" for aspiring Directors to impress the professional industry. Documentaries are made to make a point and hopefully, somehow, recoup the expense that it takes to make it. So, with those questions in mind, a Producer must look ahead and decide what the best format will be to distribute and exhibit the final product with. Film? Video? Theatrical? Television? What kind of IT hardware and internet connection will I need to run a web service the size of Google or Ebay?
Q. I have an idea for a webservice/webcommunity that will, if all goes as plan, generate as much traffic and interest as something like google or ebay. My question is, what kind of server hardware/software (storage space) and internet connection will i need to support something like that? I'm guessing a T1 line for an internet connection but don't know a whole lot about that and the costs and the costs of hardware. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. A. I believe you are grossly underestimating your requirements. Assuming you are hoping to eventually handle that kind of traffic, understand that Google, eBay, Amazon and the likes have literally thousands of servers in dozens of locations to handle this kind of traffic. They can store hundreds of terabytes of information, and process it in a fraction of a second. Now, you should build up to this kind of size at a reasonable pace. Start with a decent hosting service and see what kind of traffic you generate. You shouldn't be paying more than about $40/month to start. Most good hosting services will have multiple OC3 connections to the Internet, reasonably an order of magnitude faster than a T1. These days, a T1 is actually quite slow - I… [cont.]

A. Have a music store technician reverse the nut and the saddle positioning on the guitar. Then install strings. The rest will be up to you.
