Upgrading a HP Pavilion Elite m9500y (Video Card)?
Q. If any of you know about this computer, It has an AMD Phenom x4 running at 2.4 Ghz, 8 GB of RAM and sadly, a Geforce 9500 GS. I ocassionally play high end games such as GTA IV and Crysis at 1280x1024 at pretty good settings. I kind of figured that the card is not necessarily designed for gaming. If anyone has had experience in swapping out the Video Card, (For example, I'm looking into getting a 9800GT) I just need to know if anyone has had power supply or tower space problems. It appears that the computer is equipped with a 300W power unit and a fairly cramped case. What would someone recommend buying as far as power, and possibly could recommend another card if I'm not really thinking this out enough.

A. Here's my advice: Don't. Here are some problems you'll probably run in to: (Well, the 9800gt requires more power than what you already have as it is, so there's a problem) To get a significant upgrade the simple truth is that you would have to get a new Power Supply. The PSU may be too big or have too many thick cables to fit inside the case. Then you would have to buy a new case. The motherboard, besides not having an I/O back shield, probably would not fit into the case. New motherboard. See how this goes? At the very least, you'll want to get a new PSU that you're sure fits just fine in your case. Measure your PSU for starters and make sure it's standard sized. If it is, then almost all PSU's will fit in it just fine. If you plan… [cont.]

Would I be able to upgrade the video card in this computer?
Q. I am considering buying the HP m9500y desktop PC, but I would definitely like to upgrade the video card and power supply in it. I checked the product specs on HP's website, and noticed that there is one PCI Express x16 slot in the computer, but it's currently being used. As far as I know, video cards are the only thing that use the PCI Express x16 slot, so would that just be the NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS video card that comes with the computer, or could it be something else? If it's just the video card that comes in the computer, I could easily remove it and put in my new one. But if there's something else that may be using the slot, I probably wouldn't want to remove it. The computer's specs: My new video card (NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250… [cont.]

A. yeah, nothing else would really use that slot. Sound cards use PCI, and other multimedia controllers use various slots. You can also tell which one is video card two (easy) ways: Whatever the cable from your desktop to your monitor is connected to, that is your video card. open up the case. if there is an item in a slot, other than the CPU, that has a fan, that is it. Nothing else needs cooling. Anyway, your computer only has one PCI-E slot, and you video card (9500GS) runs in a PCI-E slot, so there is no need to check. yes, you can install a GTS 250 in it's place. Just keep in mind that the GTS250 is a 9800GTX+, only overclocked a little, and seeing as you're getting a new PSU, you may want to overclock the 9800GTX+ yourself, it'll… [cont.]

INSIGNIA SPEAKERS DONT WORK ON WINDOWS VISTA?
Q. Ok for the heads up i really don't know alot about how to find specific information about my computers card, the input names, speaker quality or whatever. So i have Insignia speakers and im pretty sure it came with a sound card for my computer. Now time has passed and that computer got really old and crashed and i got a new HP Pavilion Elite m9500y PC and i tried to hook up the speakers using all 6 sounds ports (because I don't know which one actually works with it) and apparently none of them worked. Although the HP w2207h screen is HDMI and comes with HD sound its not really loud enough, as my old speakers were better... can anybody help?

A. Speakers are agnostic of the source, so your problem is with the configuration of your sound card. (Speakers don't need any special drivers). Go to the Control panel -> Hardware and Sound and you should find some sound-related options. Make sure you configure it for 6-ch sound. Then put a DVD with 5.1 sound and do some testing.
