How do I restore my notebook computer to its original state without a disk?
Q. I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 and I want to erase everything off my hard drive and restore my windows vista to its original state. Is this possible without a restore disk. I know there is a system restore option and backup restore option but these do not bring me back to its original state. I want to erase everything and reinstall windows vista.

A. You can buy a new copy of vista *shrug* why don't you just call the manufacturer? They often offer copies of the restore disks for $10 or so.

How do you restore passwords after restoring a hard drive?
Q. Someone tried to wipe out the hard drive of a friend's computer. He has restored the hard drive, but I cannot remember how to restore the passwords. Can someone help?

A. You don't restore the passwords in the strict sense of the word. You create new users, and possibly set their passwords to what they were. Then you restore the data to the appropriate folders of the user profile. Creating the new users will create the right folders so you have a place to restore the data. For example, the user "sally" will have a location on disk that is their "My Pictures" folder which is part of their "My Documents" folder, but only once "sally" the user exists. A. even if you could restore it .. going back that far could make the system unstable depending what you have installed since. your best bet is trying something like hard drive recovery , try the following program it helped me in the past retrieving deleted files off my hard drive.

A. If it is a new laptop or desktop it will have a hardrive or partition in it that has a fresh copy of windows on it. Restart your computer and look for the "boot options press ___" and press the key. Most likely it will be F12, F1, F2 or F8 depending on brand. Once there a option will arise. If its older it should have came with a "System restore disk" that basically has your copy of windows on it. If you built your own, you should have your own copy of windows. Put that in and press any key to boot from CD.

A. o_o;; Well. Your screwed, ironically, I had this exact same problem. I tried everything from making replacement OS disks, to trying to load on drivers to the hard-drive (Little did I know Bios only accept drivers in floppy disks :\) I did everything that I can possibly do, and nothing worked. I ended up ordering the 10$ recovery disks from HP :\ When sent through the mail, I booted them up, and everything is fine and dandy now :3

A. A factory reset should always be a last option. Try going to this article about steps to take before doing that. There is a lot of good things that speed up a slow computer. If that doesn't work, then do the reset. However the only way to do a reset will remove all files. There is no way around this. The factory reset is different for many computers. Make sure to save all important files first. On many Dell's they have an easy way to do a factory reset. To do this, restart computer, then when blue dell logo appears, hold Ctrl and F11. Your type of computer would help to narrow down the options. If you dont have a Dell, either let us know what you have or go to your brands website. Good luck!

A. You can try re-installing the current Operating System or installing a new Operating System which will ask if you want to upgrade (keeping files/directories, etc) or perform a new install (overwrites everything).

If you restore your comp to factory settings, will the Operating System be wiped off too?
Q. I have an HP Pavilion Slimline desktop that I want to restore to factory settings and have all my necessary files backed up. I don't have any restore disks that came with the computer. I was just wondering if I needed those to restore it back or if I can still do so without them. Also, I was wondering if once restored, will the Operating System be completely wiped off too?
Asked by unknown - Sun Aug 23 14:39:50 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, doing a restore IS reinstalling the operating system. When an operating system installs, it deletes everything on the part of the drive it installs on (well, most operating systems do anyway). You dont necessarily need the recovery CD. If you're installing XP, then you MAY need it, as XP does not have a lot of drivers included with it. If you are installing vista, then you most likely wont need it, and if you're installing windows 7, then you wont need it.

Q. I restored my computer to its factory settings not knowing I had to do a back-up first. WE had alot of files that we need and just hope there's a way to restore the computer back to the previous settings. I've tried anything I can, and nothing seem to work. Does calling the manufacturer useful or could they do it>?

A. Once a system recovery is performed, I don't think it's possible to recover those files again. It's always best to back up your files before doing a recovery.

A. For the best chance of recovering the file - stop doing anything with the computer - shut it down. System Restore will only restore system settings, not files that were deleted. Your best hope is to use some of the free data recovery tools available, such as Recuva ( Be warned, the more you use the computer that the file was deleted on, the more chance that the file will be unrecoverable and gone forever. Ideally, you should install Recuva (or another tool) on a different PC and then slave the hard drive from the current PC into it and then run the data recovery tool. Just installing an application on the current PC could overwrite the remnants of your deleted file on the drive and negate any chance of recovering it. If this is too… [cont.]

How to restore a centerpede grass lawn?
Q. My front yard is centerpede grass which has not been cared for a long time. The grass is thinning, and many spots dying. Right now it is very dried and brown (as it should be because it's just early spring). My question is how to restore this grass? I want to buy centerpede grass seed and and re-seed the lawn but how do I do it? Just spray the seed over the old grass or do I have to till and rake the lawn up before apply the grass seed? Thank for your help.
Asked by NorthCarolinaNow - Wed Mar 5 22:16:43 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here's a good source of information: To re-seed, you will need to thoroughly rake the bare spots. Tilling shouldn't be necessary The jist seems to be - keep it watered, don't cut too short and don't overfertilize. The last article suggests checking for nematode damage if it is wilting and thinning out. I lived in Georgia for a while and overseeded a fescue lawn with centipede seed. Seemed to take longer to germinate than most other grasses, but patience paid off.
