How many speakers can I put on Sony Receiver?
Q. I have a Sony STR-K502P 5.1 receiver that I THINK is rated at 100watts per channel. What I want to do is use it and put 8 speakers throughout my home in the ceiling. Can this be done? Will this receiver handle all of that? What size speakers to buy, and how powerful of speakers to buy? How should I wire the speakers if I only have 5 inputs? Anything you can suggest will be greatly appreciated.
Asked by Chad Brone - Sun Aug 30 11:18:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. What you need is a speaker selector switch with 1 to 4 set of speaker connection. This way it will not overload your amplifier in the receiver, it will also make sure the load resistance are compatible with your receiver. Speakers with a 50 watt rating for the other rooms should work out. If you want more power you should get a multiple power amp to power each each individually. Hope this will help you out.

Can my Bose subwoofer be connected to my Sony receiver?
Q. I have an active Bose subwoofer that was with my home theater. I now have a Sony receiver to replace the crummy Bose one made around 1996. The input on the sub is like none I've seen before. Is there any way to connect these two?
Asked by SteelersFan - Tue Jan 22 10:06:55 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most if not all Bose subwoofers are proprietary in which you'll have to use it with a Bose receiver. The best thing to do is sell that sub and buy an HSU or SVS sub.

Is it possible to assign a sony receiver remote control to the PS3?
Q. I have a sony receiver (STR-DA5200ES) and I would like to control the PS3 (to play movies) with the remote control (RM-AAL005)
Asked by Joan - Wed Apr 7 12:19:16 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The remote control for your reciever is IR while the PS3 take Bluetooth radio signals. To get a IR remote to work, you need a usb dongle (looks like a thumb drive) that will recieve IR and communicate like a wired game controller. I grabbed one from a Blu-Wave remote control. Think it was $20 and threw the remote away. I have it programmed to my Harmony1. I believe your remote has some universal programming capabilities, but dont believe that it will work. The dongle replicates your PS3 controller functions, so will need to program each button,. There is no way to copy the PS button, so will need to turn on manually. Turning off, assign a macro to go all the way left then up on the XMB. Hope that helps.

Can I use a Sony receiver with Phillips speakers?
Q. I have a Phillips Home theater system right now- however, I need a new receiver that will sync with my Bravia TV and my Ps3. Sony makes a receiver that has the Bravia sync. The thing is, my phillips speakers aren't regular speaker wire, they have like the little plugs to plug into the back of my Phillips system. If I cut that plug off and stripped the wire, would I be able to use those speakers with a Sony receiver??
Asked by Jon T - Sun Jun 28 14:05:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Generally - No. Phillips does NOT make speakers to be compatible with any electronics but their own. This is why we never recommend the $199 box home theater systems as you cannot swap parts in/out. Look on the back of the speakers. If they say 8 ohm or 6 or even 4 - you could probably cut the plugs off and use them. But to get impressive power numbers - these speakers are often 4,3 or even 2 ohms which is close to a short circuit. Also - forget the "Brava Sync" thing. This is just a gimmick to get you to only buy Sony products. Look into the Onkyo TX-SR or Yamaha RX-V series of receivers. Much better quality and compatible with lots of gear including your TV and PS3.

How can I get more bass from my Sony Receiver HT-DWG700?
Q. Hi, I would like to get more bass out of my Sony Receiver home theater surround sound system when I watch tv or movies. Right now I'm not getting very much bass at all. Just for info, I just purchase the system today and i have not test speakers or play around with it. Just thought someone can give me a quick way to set up the bass, gain more bass out of my surround sound. I would like to get as much bass as I can out of it.

A. With a sub woofer/satellite system all the base is going to come from your sub, but you can improve the sound or base. First start with the turning up the sub volume in the receivers menu. Second, and most important is speaker placement. Move the sub around and see where you get the best sound from where you are sitting to watch TV.

A. if you give the make/model of your dvd player this might help better answer your question. Using the audio right/left (white/red) jacks on the back will not give digital surround. there could be an 'orange' colored jack on the dvd player - this would be digital coax output that woudl plug to your receiver. again make/model of your dvd and receiver would help

Can't get sound from TV to Sony Receiver System speakers?
Q. I have a Toshiba Cinema HD TV connected to a Sony dvd hdmi theater System. Having problems getting sound from TV thru to receiver speakers. Is it necessary to connect HDMI cableto the TV? The TV does not have an HDMI input.

A. Provided that you're going from the audio out on the TV to the audio in on the receiver, you might need to just go into the TV's menu and set those speakers to off. Then it should just run through the speaker system as normal.

Can a Sony B50 Satellite Receiver or a RCA DTC100 HDTV Satellite receiver be used to receive FTA signals?
Q. I have a Sony B50 satellite receiver with access card and a RCA DTC 100 HDTV satellite receiver w/remote, no card and would like to be able to convert one or both of them to receive FTA signals. Can this be done? If not I would like to know which FTA brands are the best, most reliable. I've checked out several on the net, but actually cannot see much difference. Maybe the Coolsat 8000 or Pansat. One with HDTV is preferable. Thanks

A. Sorry Your Current Setup will not work for FTA. Several FTA HD Receivers are available and Yes Coolsat 8000 is one of them , Pansat is still not available but will be soon , the biggest issue with these receivers is the ability to Blind Scan . True Blind Scan allows your receiver to scan and find all frequencies transmitting , other FTA receivers you will have to manually input frequencies and you will have to rely on a website or other source for that info , so if a Wild Feed like a College Basketball game in 4:2:0 happen to air at 1:00 pm and your receiver picked it up you'll be watching instantly , otherwise you would have to depend on other people to tell you that it's on. Personally I'd wait a little while before getting a HD… [cont.]

Is older panasonic home theater compatible with new blu ray sony wireless receiver?
Q. I have the speakers to a panasonic home theater (sa-ht720) Would they work with a sony wireless blu ray receiver (bdv-is1000)?

A. If your Blu Ray player has a built in amplifier then yes...Just be carefull because different speakers have different power capabilities so check that the current speakers you have match the output on the BluRay/Amplifier! To check if your BluRay has a built in amp...has it got a volume control on the front? and has it got 6 speaker inputs around the back? If yes to both, then yes it has a built in amp!

A. I also have a cable box from motorola and a sony receiver so here is my solution. HDMI to TV for Video. Optical Cable from Cable box to receiver. Just turn the speakers off on the TV. I am old fashioned I guess and prefer less hops with my components. I hope this helps. If you can't use Fiber Optic then you can still get Dolby Digital using the RCA stereo cables.

A. If your receiver is not capable of upconverting standard definition video sources for output over HDMI, then you will have to also connect a cable from the receiver to the projector that matches the video format being output by the Wii.

Sony receiver sound output problem?
Q. I have a sony home audio system. After moving, the receiver appeared to work fine, it powers on and behaves as usual. However, there is no sound output. I played with it and noticed that when the volume is turned to max, I could hear the sound output but with a very low volume and fuzzy sound. Do you have an idea of what part exactly in the receiver is broken?

Question about sony DG500 Receiver and surround sound?
Q. I recently bought a sony DG500 Receiver that has dolby digital ex and dts ex. my question is every time I use dolby digital or dolby pro logic all the talking comes out of the centre speaker and the sound effects come out the sides as needed. Is that the way it supposed to work? I have not used the dts yet so I'm not sure if it does it there too.
Asked by David Moore - Sun Oct 4 11:30:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, that is exactly the way it's supposed to work. Here's the thing: when you run just left and right (red and white) audio inputs into a receiver, it's only a stereo signal, in other words, two channel. Since most Home Theaters have 5 speakers (plus the LFE 'Low Frequency Effects' or Subwoofer, which is the .1) it takes that stereo signal and "fakes it" across all 5 speakers. That's why you don't have any clear separation from one speaker to the next. With a digital input (optical/tos link or HDMI) or even a discrete 6 channel analog input you are actually giving each speaker exactly the signal it should be getting. So you're actually doing it "right" now =D Now the biggest thing is to have the speakers position correctly...center… [cont.]

A. Is the Sony receiver a home theater in a box? (with built-in DVD player?) Then, you need to switch the receiver to "AUX" when watching TV through the Uverse box. If not, make sure you select the appropriate input. If the att box has digital audio out , use it to get 5,1 surround sound - instead of just stereo through the rca cables.
