How to hook external speakers to my tv, vcr, cable box, and use no amp?
Q. I know it is possible, because when I was younger we used to go in the garage and blast music tv programs with only speakers hooked via phono plugs on old tv sets, until the police came and said to turn it down. Now, why can't I hook up external speakers to a tv, vcr, or Comcast cable box the same way, with NO AMP? (I'm not getting any younger and I don't have forever to get the best answer.)

A. the big heavy power line transformer was removed from TV sets in the 1960s, and for a while newer sets worked hot off the line. that means that headphones and external speaker could electrocute the user, so those connections were eliminated. In more recent times, hot sets were replaced with switching ps so that the chassis could again be isolated from the line. but to avoid lawsuits with movie producers, the audio and video outputs were removed to prevent you from videotape recording, although AV inputs were added to allow tape playback. Cable boxes and VCRs never had built in audio amps, although they did have AV outs that could go to a stereo. If you want loud sound use the AV outs and run through your stereo system.

What is the best way to fix the VCR on a TV/VCR combo set?
Q. I have an Emerson TV/VCR combo for 6 years and lately, the VCR part does not work at all (the TV part is fine, by the way). Here is the problem with it, everytime when I put in a tape in, it eats the tape. I been told that the VCR needs cleaning, so I bought a VHS cleaner for the VCR, and still, it still ate the cleaner tape. Is there a way to get it fixed?
Asked by tlcoopi - Tue Jul 10 18:12:20 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It should be fixable IF parts are available... Your take-up idler is not reeling in the tape during play... If you go into the VCR menu and turn off "AutoPlay" it will stop loading the tape and playing it and eating it... Then you can insert a tape, and hit rewind...if you hear the tape rewind, then try Fast Forward...if it works on both then the reels aren't stuck and the brakes are released...and your idler belt is ok...(you won't need that part) Then if you play it and it eats it...the idler's clutch is bad...(then the idler must be replaced)

How do I connect a HD TV, HD cable box, DVD recorder w/HDMI uplink & a VCR?
Q. I just purchased a new DVD recorder with the HD up-link. After MANY hours I have it hooked up to a TV, VCR, and Cable Box. There is one problem left. Audio and video need to go out from the cable box (Comcast HD box) and to both the TV and the DVD player. I have video going out with RGB cords to the TV and regular video out to the DVD player. The problem is audio. There is only one audio out spot on the cable box. Right now I have that out going to the DVD player, so the TV has no audio unless the DVD player is on. The problem with this is that the DVD player does not show TV in HD quality... defeating the entire purpose. I've tried using a digital coaxil, but that won't work because it is an audio out spot on both the DVD player and… [cont.]

What's the best way to simplify a VCR/TV/DVD player/Cable setup?
Q. My 80 year old mom currently has a tv, a DVD player, a VCR, and a Comcast cable box. She uses the VCR to tape one program (East Enders) after she goes to bed. Everything is of different brands. The tv is pretty good, but the DVD player and VCR are low end. Her current setup requires her to use 3 remote controls, so it's a bit of a mess. What's an affordable way to simplify her setup so she has ideally only one remote control? Thank you.

Can anyone explain how to hook up a TV, VCR, and DVD player?
Q. I used to have all three hooked up, and I was able to access each by using the "input" button on my remote. Somehow they got disconnected, and now I can't get the DVD player to work. When I push the "input" button, it just changes my TV to channel 3 rather than accessing the DVD player. The vcr works just fine though??? Any suggestions?

A. VCR needs to be between your cable input and the TV at RF level. DVD needs to be on the aux input (video and audio RCA jacks)

How do I connect all the wires to my VCR, DVD recorder, cable box, and TV?
Q. I would like to record tv shows from tv to vcr and then from vcr I would like to record video cassettes to dvd recorder. The thing I don't get is that my tv and vcr have different looking antenna output and input ports. VCR, for instance, indicates Aerial input and RF output while TV has Aerial looking input only. Cable and antenna wires do not match those ports. Is there a solution for this?
Asked by dkaykov5 - Sun May 18 11:05:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I would need to know what type of connections you do have. An RF port is the common threaded port that I think you are talking about. Your DVD Recorder will most likely have RCA ports, (Yellow, White and Red), as well as other connection types like S-Video, HDMI, DVI. If your VCR and TV only have RF ports (F-81), you will need an RF modulator to convert the signal for you. There are also mass switched out there. You can hook everything up to one hub.

Can a vcr be disconnected from a tv/vcr combo?
Q. I have a 20 inch tv/vcr combo and my son stuck a toy in the vcr part. Now the tv won't stay on because the vcr takes it as there is a tape stuck in it. The toy was removed but the vcr keeps running and trying to eject a tape. Is there a way to by pass the vcr part so i can at least have the tv working?
Asked by Amy C - Mon Oct 20 15:14:41 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I've seen this problem before. What the toy did was to make a timer wheel with teeth jump a few teeth and offset the timing of the tape going down and activating the timing mode switch. In order to fix it, and if the teeth are not broken off, is to reset that timer wheel which is located on the right side as you look at the VCR tray. Unfortunately it has to be disassembled to get access to it. Not an easy task if you've never done it before. This timer wheel moves the timing mode switch similar to the timing wheel on a Washing Machine with levers and pawls to activate the proper wash cycle. Oh, sorry I didn't answer your question, yes, some units have interconnect cables that can be disconnected to disable only the VCR, but that… [cont.]

Can I hook up a closed-circuit TV camera to a "normal" TV/VCR?
Q. I have an old General Electric/Diebold CCTV camera. Can I hook it up to a normal TV or VCR? I got an adapter and hooked it up, but nothing is shown when I tune to channel 3 or 4 on the TV.
Asked by nbarb99 - Sat May 27 22:18:14 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Master U is correct. The output of a closed circuit camera is composite video, not an r.f. signal, so connecting it to the antenna socket of the t.v. or v.c.r. won't work.

A. In other words, your VCR has a built in tuner. If you connect the antenna to the ANT IN F-connector and set up your VCR to record from its menu, you should be good to go. You do not need to turn ON your TV to record anything on the VCR. Who's going to watch it if you're at work???

What is the best practice to hook devices (DVD, Satallite, VCR), Plasma TV & home theater receiver.?
Q. 1) Should I be running seperate cables to the plasma from DVD, Satallite receiver and VCR (I've to run component cables from DVD & sat receiver - and composite vedio cable from VCR because thats is what the output of my devices) and audio cables from these devices to Yamaha HTR6050 receiver. 2) The 2nd option is to run component and composite cables from devices to the reciever and then run single cable from Yamaha receiver to plasma TV. My plasma tv has one 29-pin DVI input where as Yahama receiver has 1 HDMI output (I'm assuming I can find HDMI to DVI cable ...) In this case I think I've to run seperate audio cable from yamaha receiver to TV and then from receiver to home theater speakers. Has anybody done research on such things… [cont.]

A. If I understand properly your receiver upconverts any incoming video to HDMI ,correct? Based on the information you provided this would be more convenient for you, and makes the receiver the hub of your system. Consult your manual first but run all video audio connection to the receiver and make your TV a monitor. good luck

We just purchased a Magnavox universal remote for a Phillips/Magnovox tv/vcr. We cannot get it to do anything?

A. Only following the instructions will work out. You probably just did something wrong. If it says that it will work with your TV then it will, they did not make a mistake. Try again.

Do I need an S-video cable for both a VCR and TV when converting VHS to DVD on my recorder?
Q. I have a VCR connected to my DVD Recorder, which is connected to the TV. Will I need more than one S-video cable for the picture quality to improve from composite recordings? Would there be a difference?
